Roles of four chitinases (ChiA, CHiB, ChiC, and ChiD) in the chitin degradation system of marine bacterium Alteromonas sp. strain 0-7

Article Abstract:

The enzymatic properties, expression levels, and synergistic effects of ChiA, ChiB, ChicC, and ChiD to elucidate the reasons for the production of multiple chitinases by Alteromonas sp. strain 0-7 in the presence of chitin is examined. The results suggested that ChiA was produced in the largest quantities by Alteromonas sp. strain 0-7 and showed the highest activity against powdered chitin among the four chitinases.

Characterization of chitinase C from a marine bacterium, Alteromonas sp. strain 0-7, and its corresponding gene and domain structure

Article Abstract:

The cloning and sequencing of the chitinase C-encoding (chiC) gene from Alteromonas sp. strain 0-7 was described. Observations showed that chiC gene encoded a protein consisting of 430 amino acids. Three discrete domains were revealed by comparison of the amino acid sequence with those of other related enzymes. These included the chitin-binding domain, fibronectin type III-like domain and the catalytic domain. Results indicated that the signal sequence of Alteromonas is recognized by the Escherichia coli secretion machinery.
