Imprinting and the initiation of gene silencing in the germ line
Article Abstract:
Parental alleles must be subjected to germ line-specific epigenetic modifications to achieve monoallelic expression of imprinted genes. In mammals, the changes can be propagated from sperm and egg to the developing embryos to adulthood. However, this form of gametic imprinting seems to be non-existent in the Drosophila family. The imprint initiation complex, which is confined to the germ line, can be used to change genetic expression during development.

A transcriptional logic for nuclear reprogramming
Article Abstract:
An approach to delineating the minimal set of factors required to confer the developmental potential of an embryonic stem (ES) cell into a terminally differntiated somatic cell is described. The nuclear reprogramming observed by introduction of transcription factors into somatic cells is substantial, but it differs from the more complete reprogramming that is observed after transfer of nuclei from somatic cells into oocytes.

Nuclear reprogramming by human embryonic stem cells
Article Abstract:
A study shows that human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are able to reprogram the nuclei of fully differentiated human somatic cells, apparently conferring on them a pluripotent state. The experiments conducted suggest that hESCs probably contain key reprogramming factors that could modify a somatic cell nucleus, returning it to a pluripotent state.
