Influence of the RpoS (KatF) sigma factor maintenance of viability and culturability of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium in seawater
Article Abstract:
Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium cells become dormant but stay viable if nutrient content of the seawater is low. This dormancy is controlled by the sigma factor RpoS whose synthesis is indirectly dependent on guanosine 3',5'-bipyrophosphate. Studies show that the effect of RpoS depends on the stage of the growth cycle the cells are in and the salinity of the growth medium. Cells which are grown anaerobically in highly saline water until the stationary phase remain active longer because of some process which was not affected by RpoS.

Characterization and chromosomal mapping of antimicrobial resistance genes in Salmonella enterica serotype typhimurium
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that many Salmonella enterica serotype typhimurium DT104 and non-DT104 isolates contain integron-associated gene cassettes that carry genes for antibiotic resistance. Of 226 isolates, all DT104 isolates contained the integron gene cassettes and all but two of the non-DT104 isolates contained the cassettes.

Persistence of a Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium DT12 clone in a piggery and in agricultural soil amended with Salmonella-contaminated slurry
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that a strain of Salmonella enterica has persisted on a Danish pig farm for at least five years as of 2001. In addition, the bacterium was found in agricultural soil because pig waste is used as an agricultural fertilizer.
