Inheritance of the morphological differences between maize and teosinte: comparison of results for two F2 populations
Article Abstract:
The inheritance of characteristics in maize and its probable wild ancestor, teosinte, was studied using molecular marker loci (MMLs). Maps of quantitative trait loci (QTL) were obtained for progeny of crosses between maize and teosinte and results were compared with previously obtained data. The F2 populations for both species showed similar QTLs in traits related to structural differences. There were differences in QTLs for yield related traits. These results suggested that structural traits have a more stable expression than traits for yield.

Unequal exchange and meiotic instability of disease-resistance genes in the Rp1 region of maize
Article Abstract:
The mechanism for meitotic instability of disease-resistance genes to the fungus Puccina sorghi, rust disease, in the Rp1 region was studied in two experiments. Test cross progenies derived from maize lines homozygous for either Rp1-J or Rp1-G but heterozygous for flanking markers were used to determine the role of recombination in region's instablity. Analysis of data based on the screened susceptible seedlings showed unequal exchange as the primary mechanism.
