Inhibition of growth of a Graphium sp. on gaseous n-alkanes by gaseous n-alkynes and n-alkenes
Article Abstract:
Acetylene suppresses the growth of the filamentous fungus Graphium sp. strain ATCC 58400 on gaseous n-alkanes such as ethane, propane and n-butane but has no suppressive action on cells grown on ethanol, acetate or potato dextrose broth. This indicates that acetylene suppresses the initial stage of ethane oxidation as cells grown on the oxidation products, ethanol and acetate, are unaffected by acetylene. Low levels of other n-alkynes and n-alkenes have a similar inhibitory effect on cells grown on n-alkanes. The fungus is unable to grow on gaseous alkynes and alkenes.

Plant-derived oils reduce pathogens and gaseous emissions from stored cattle waste
Article Abstract:
The plant-derived oils carvacrol and thymol could be used to prevent the production of short-chain volatile fatty acids from stored cattle waste. These fatty acids are produced during incomplete anoxic degradation of the waste and give it its characteristic offensive smell.

Study of the infectivity of saline-stored Campylobacter jejuni for day-old chicks
Article Abstract:
The infectivity of Campylobacter jejuni can be decreased by storing the bacterium in saline. Nevertheless, high levels of maternally derived anti-campylobacter antibodies did not completely protect day-old chicks from campylobacter colonization.
