The influence of relative age on success and dropout in male soccer players

Article Abstract:

The consistent asymmetry in the birth-date distribution of professional soccer players led researchers to investigate whether similar asymmetries emerge throughout youth categories in soccer. A regression analyses examined the relationship between month of birth and the number of participants at various levels of play in soccer. Results indicated that individuals born from Aug to Oct, the early part of the selection year, are more likely to be identified as talented and exposed to higher levels of coaching, while players born late in the selection process tended to dropout as early as 12 years of age.

Article Abstract:

Correlations between soccer player age and assessment of their athletic ability reveal those born early in a selection year, between Jan and Mar, were more often evaluated as "talented" and generally given more intensive coaching. Suggestions are offered to correct this age bias against players born between Aug and Oct.

The sex ratio and age specific male mortality: evidence for culling in utero

Article Abstract:

The article analyzes whether exogenous insults in utero, peculiarly among male fetuses, induce cohort damage in populations. This culled cohort argument is supported by tests that used the sex ratio as a guage of insults inflicted upon cohorts in gestation.
