Intracellular signal triggered by cholera toxin in Saccharomyces boulardii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Article Abstract:
The hypothesis that the cholera toxin (CT) is able to adhere specifically to the surfaces of different yeasts such as Saccharomyces boulardii and S. cerevisiae was tested. The addition of CT to yeast cells resulted in trehalase activation. Experiments on the A and B subunits of CT revealed that both were necessary for activation. The addition of CT led to a cyclic AMP signal in both yeast species. These suggested that trehalase stimulation by CT occurred through the cAMP-mediated protein phosphorylation cascade. Specific receptor on the yeasts were able to bind to the toxin.

Localized, positive charge mediates adhesion of Rhodosporidium toruloides to barley leaves and polystyrene
Article Abstract:
The physical and chemical mechanisms that mediate adhesion of Rhodosporidium toruloides to polystyrene and barley leaves are investigated. To this end, cell surface charge and hydrophobicity and attachment to glass, barley and polystyrene are studied for wild-type Rhodosporidium toruloides and attachment-minus variants. Results show that localized, positive charge rather than hydrophobic interactions mediates the adhesion of Rhodosporidium toruloides to barley leaves.
