Isolation and distribution of a novel iron-oxidizing crenarchaeon from acidic geothermal springs in Yellowstone National Park
Article Abstract:
The isolation and characterization of an Fe(II)-oxidizing, thermophilic, acidophilic organism Metallosphaera sp. strain MK1 obtained from acid-sulfate-chloride geothermal spring in Yellowstone National Park is described. The distribution of highly related MK1-like 16S rRNA gene sequences in acidic Fe(III) oxide microbial mats is consistent with the observed characteristics and growth optima of Metallosphaera-like MK1.

Selective phylogenetic analysis targeting 16S rRNA genes of hyperthermophilic archaea in the deep-subsurface hot biosphere
Article Abstract:
The selective phylogenetic analysis (SePA) is examined to determine its ability to eliminate contamination by archaeal rRNA genes in deep-subsurface hot biosphere. The SePA method is very useful method for culture-independent community analysis of hyperthermophilic archaea obtained from deep-subsurface biosphere.
