Meiotic transvection in fungi
Article Abstract:
Failure of transvection, failure of internuclear communication and an effect of reduced dosage of the gene product were considered to explain the 'ascus-dominant' characteristic of Asm-1+ deletion mutants. Asm-1+ should be properly paired to its allelic counterpart in the zygote to achieve proper regulation of subsequent sexual sporulation. A disruption of pairing prevents ascospore progeny maturation. Transvection in Neurospora, which was found to occur immediately prior to meiosis, may be demonstrated between wild-type alleles.

Viral evolution revealed by bacteriophage PRD1 and human adenovirus coat protein structures
Article Abstract:
Viral evolution as revealed by human adenovirus coat protein structures and bacteriophage PRD1 is discussed. The unusual PRD1 has a membrane beneath the outer icosahedral protein coat. Each of three interlocking subunits in the major coat protein has two 8-stranded viral jelly rolls that are normal for the viral capsid. The P3 molecule, which is the major coat protein, is much like hexon, the equivalent in human adenovirus. The striking similarities strongly suggest evolutionary relationship.

Meiotic silencing by unpaired DNA
Article Abstract:
Meiotic silencing by unpaired DNA during meiosis affects all DNA homologous with the unpaired DNA. In Neurospora, the meiotic silencing phenomenon may lead to reproductive isolation of species.
