Microbial communities in the surface mucopolysaccharide layer and the black band microbial mat of black band-diseased Siderastrea siderea

Article Abstract:

Microbial community profiles and species composition associated with two black band-diseased colonies of the coral Siderastrea siderea were investigated using 16S rRNA-targeted gene cloning, sequencing and amplicon-length heterogeneity PCR (LH-PCR). Results revealed high variability in the microbial community composition and profiles between different black band disease samples and the surface mucopolysaccharide layer of apparently healthy areas of the same black band-diseased coral colonies.

Cyclosporin C is the main antifungal compound produced by Acremonium luzulae

Article Abstract:

The antifungal activity of Acremonium azulae on various filamentous fungi was analyzed to determine the properties of the antibiotic agent that was produced by the microbe. Analysis of the antifungal activity of Acremonium luzulae in modified Sabouraud dextrose cultures indicated the presence of an antibiotic characterized as cyclosporin C. Furthermore, feeding experiments indicated that Acremonium luzulae did not synthesize other forms of cyclosporin besides cyclosporin C.
