Microbial diversity associated with odor modification for production of fertilizers from chicken litter
Article Abstract:
An economically viable solution to the disposal of waste from chicken houses is the treatment to produce a natural, granulated fertilizer that can be commercially marketed for garden and commercial use and for this, odor of the final product is important in consumer acceptance and an earthy odor is desirable. By understanding and manipulating the microbial processes occurring during this process, it may be possible to modify the odors produced.

Distribution of bacterioplankton in meromictic lake Saelenvannet, as determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified gene fragments coding for 16S rRNA
Article Abstract:
Marine research shows that a significant proportion of bacterioplankton found in the meromictic lake Lake Saelenvannet, Norway, are related to Chlorobium phaeovibrioides, chloroplasts from eukaryotic algae and unidentified Archaea. PCR amplification of the V3 region of 16S rRNA was used to study genetic sequences from the bacterioplankton. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis was used to identify and match specific genetic sequences.

Use of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to link sporadic cases of invasive listeriosis with recalled chocolate milk
Article Abstract:
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis appears to be useful in detecting cases of listeriosis that are linked to a contaminated food product. AscI restriction digests resolved using the electrophoresis technique were identical in Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from four patients and an isolate from a recalled chocolate milk product. An otherwise undetectable multistate listeriosis outbreak was revealed with this technique.
