Microsatellite analysis of the regeneration process of Magnolia obovata Thunb
Article Abstract:
Microsatellite analysis has been carried out in the regeneration process of Magnolia obovata Thunb. Polymorphic microsatellite markers were used with 83 adult trees in a watershed over 69 ha and saplings from a smaller research plot at the center of the watershed. Of 91 saplings, 24 had both parents, 31 had one parent and 36 had no parent in the watershed. Active gene exchange was in action across the watershed area. Average distance between parents and saplings was significantly smaller than that of pairs randomly chosen between adults and saplings. Distance of pollen movement inferred was 3.2 m to 540 m with average 131.1m +/- 121.1m. Long-distance seed dispersal by birds,limitation in acceptance of pollen due to phenology in each flower and inbreeding depression are thought to be causes of large gene exchange over the watershed.

Differences in genetic structure between two Japanese beech (Fagus crenata Blume) stands
Article Abstract:
Differences in genetic structure of two beech (Fagus crenata Blume) stands in Japan were studied to look at effects of forest cutting on within-population genetic structure. The two stands had differing cutting histories. Genetic variability was slightly but significantly lower in one stand in which significant linkage disequilibrium was also seen. It was not seen in the other. Genetic structures of the two stands differed greatly. A self-thinning process was simulated. This showed reduced genetic variability and showed linkage disequilibrium would have significant influence in one stand for generations.

Impact of founder population, drift and selection on the genetic diversity of a recently translocated tree population
Article Abstract:
The spatial and temporal patterns of genetic diversity within a disjunct population of Cedrus atlantica were assessed to study the evolutionary forces in a recently established tree population. The recently established tree populations were found to have a higher diversity than older ones, which seemed in accordance with experimental surveys.
