Modulation of Neisseria porin (PorB) by cytostolic ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)/GTP (Guanine Triphosphate) of target cells: parallels between pathogen accommodation and mitochondrial endosymbiosis
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the Neisseria bacteria secretes PorB to acquire ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate)/GTP (Guanine Triphosphate) from the host cells. Data also suggests that PorB penetration of the host's cell membrane is similar to the translocation process of the mitochondria. PorB is utilized by the bacteria to gain entrance into the cell membrane by the process of ligand-binding to nucleosides. PorB would then transport the cell's ATP into the bacteria in a process that is similar to mitochondrial porin translocation.

The inositol triphosphate receptor regulates a 50-second behavioral rhythm in C. elegans
Article Abstract:
The inositol triphosphate receptor, which regulates a 50-second behavioral rhythm in Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode, is discussed. A study has shown that the defecation cycle, which is characterized by contraction of three distinct sets of muscles at 50 second intervals, is regulated by periodic calcium release mediated by the inositol trisphosphate receptor. The receptor is an essential timekeeper component for the cycle and represents a novel mechanism for control of behavioral rhythms.

Acidic sphingomyelinase mediates entry of N. gonorrhoeae into nonphagocytic cells
Article Abstract:
Invasion of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo) into human mucosal epithelial cells is seen as an important event during infection. An activation of the phosphatidychloline-specific phospholipase C (PC-PLC) and acidic sphingomyelinase (ASM) by N. gonorrhoeae, is reported, using different human epithelial cells and primary fibroblasts. The activation of PC-LC and ASM is critical for the entry of N. gonorrhoeae into nonphagocytic human cell types.
