Molecular and genetic analyses of the B type surface protein gene from Paramecium tetraurelia
Article Abstract:
The B type variable surface protein gene from Paramecium tetraurelia stock 51 was cloned and sequenced. Four independent mutants in which the B gene has been deleted were characterized and crossed with wild-type cells. F1 analysis showed that cell lines which have been derived from both parental cytoplasms have identical B gene copy numbers, indicating a recessive Mendelian mutation. F2 progeny analysis revealed a 1:1 B(super -) and B(super +) segregation ratio in one of three B(sub -) mutants examined, while the remaining two mutants had more B(super +) cells.

Interactions between genes involved in exocytotic membrane fusion in Paramecium
Article Abstract:
An investigation was conducted to determine the number, nature and function of genes involved in exocytotic membrane fusion in Paramecium. The results showed that membrane fusion in this organism involves the action of 13 genes known as nd genes. Three of these genes were associated with the formation of rosettes, a structural array of intramembranous particles and its underlying connective material. Two of the genes code for diffusible cytosolic factors. The possible roles of the other genes in exocytotic membrane fusion are discussed.

Whatever happened to Paramecium genetics?
Article Abstract:
Majority of current introductory textbooks to genetics omit any reference to Paramecium. While the study of the protozoan offers a wealth of opportunities in genetics research, most authors apparently ignore Paramecium since previous advances in that field seem too complicated for other geneticists to understand. Other possible reasons include lack of funding for research on ciliates or that Paramecium is too difficult to culture.
