Expression of a functional antizearalenone single-chain Fv antibody in transgenic Arabidopsis plants
Article Abstract:
Researchers have successfully expressed an antibody against zearalenone in Arabidopsis. Zearalenone is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium that can affect animal feed. Engineering plants to produce the antibody could passively immunize the animal that eats it.

Molecular cloning, expression, and characterization of a functional single-chain Fv antibody to the mycotoxin zearalenone
Article Abstract:
The heavy chain and kappa light-chain variable region genes of an antizearalenone hybridoma cell line (2G3-6E3-2E2) are isolated and joined as a single-chain Fv (scFv) DNA fragment. The scFv DNA fragment is cloned into a phagemid (pCANTAB5E) and expressed as a fusion protein, which is displayed on the surfaces of recombinant phages. Certain soluble scFv antibodies (QY1.5) are produced, which exhibit higher cross-reactivity with zearalenone analogs. The antibodies have greater sensitivity to methanol destabilization than the parent antibody.

Researchers describe several peptides that mimic the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). DON can cause vomiting when present in food, so methods are needed for detecting it in food quickly and cheaply. Researchers are focusing on an enzyme-linked immunoassay using monoclonal antibodies against DON.
