Molecular ecology of tetracycline resistance: development and validation of primers for detection of tetracycline resistance genes encoding ribosomal protection proteins

Article Abstract:

The feed and feces of swine and the rumina of cows were examined for the detection and circulation of gene fragments for tetracycline resistance, using phylogenetically distinct separate clusters as polymerase chain reaction primers. Results indicate that ribosomal protection proteins of resistance genes for tetracycline can be found in both swine feed and feces and in bovine rumina.

Researchers have discovered bacterial genes for antibiotic resistance in groundwater near two pig farms. This shows that these genes can be introduced into soil bacteria, and that groundwater could serve as a source of antibiotic resistance.

Monitoring and source tracking of tetracycline resistance genes in lagoons and groundwater adjacent to swine production facilities over a 3-year period

Article Abstract:

The occurrence of tetracycline resistance ([Tc.sup.r]) genes in groundwater underlying two swine production facilities was determined over a 3-year period to monitor the dissemination of resistance genes into the environment. All seven ([Tc.sup.r]) genes were continually detected in groundwater during the 3-year monitoring period and new sequence clusters and unique indigenous resistance gene pools were also found in the groundwater.
