Molt of Cory's Shearwater during the breeding season
Article Abstract:
Molt in Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea borealis) during the breeding season is influenced by intrinsic cycles acquired by evolution, not determined by external factors. In breeding birds, studied at Vila Islet, Azores, a complete annual molt occurs that partially coincides with the breeding season. Molt begins during mid incubation period around July with the replacement of the ventral body-surface feathers at a point on the upper breast and proceeds downwards and laterally. The dorsal body molt follows a similar pattern. Primary renewal occurs between Aug and Mar; rectrix renewal starts during winter, is suspended until Aug, and finished by Sep.

Genetic variability and isolation of Cory's shearwater colonies in the Northeast Atlantic
Article Abstract:
The genetic diversity among and within the eight colonies of Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea borealis) in the Madeira, Azores, Canarias and Berlenga archipelagoes in the Northeast Atlantic was investigated. The result of DNA fingerprinting studies, using one probe and two restriction enzymes, showed that genetic diversity has low correlation with population size. This suggests that genetic diversity reflected historical rather than current population sizes.
