The effect of male presence on nestling growth and fluctuating asymmetry in the blue tit
Article Abstract:
Blue tits in the Uppsala, central Sweden area, were examined in May and Jun. 1994, to determine the impact of male absence on breeding indicators. Nine out of 82 breeding pairs examined had a female raising the brood without paternal support. This absence was only reflected when chicks were at age 5 and 8 days, when substantial differences were observed for all major traits. High fluctuating symmetry was likewise observed for all age levels among tits with male presence, but only at age 14 days for birds without male presence.

Leap-frog migration in the Fox Sparrow: minimizing the cost of spring migration
Article Abstract:
A model for Leap-frog migration in the Fox Sparrow is proposed for minimizing the cost of spring migration. The model assumes that optimal wintering latitude is determined by suitabilities of the range of possible wintering sites. Meanwhile, when food availability improves, conditions for premigratory fattening conditions in locations such as Alaska are perfect among populations undergoing a trans-oceanic migration.

Effects of ectoparasites on nestling body mass in the House Sparrow
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the effect on the body mass of House Sparrow unfledged chicks of a haematophagous mite. The relationship between the size of broods and the size of the mite population is discussed.
