Monoclonal antibodies against Streptococcus pneumoniae detect epitopes on eubacterial ribosomal proteins L7/L12 and on streptococcal elongation factor Ts
Article Abstract:
Monoclonal antibodies designated 144,H-3 and 218,C-5 were raised against two distinct Streptococcus pneumoniae strains. Western blot analysis revealed that a 12-kDa protein common among the different bacterial genera and mammalian lymphocytes tested reacts with the two monoclonal antibodies. Microsequencing technique demonstrated that the protein has a significant amino acid homology with eubacterial ribosomal proteins L7/L12. 144,H-3 antibody also reacted with a 43 kDa protein derived from streptococci which was found to be identical with the amino acid sequence of the elongation factor Ts from Escherichia coli.

Evidence for different mannosylation processes involved in the association of beta-1,2-linked oligomannosidic epitopes in Candida albicans mannan and phospholipomannan
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of beta-1,2-oligomannosides under conditions inhibiting the association of these residues in Candida albicans mannan and phospholipomannan is examined to determine the contribution of these oligomannosidic epitopes to the cell wall and define their role in pathogenic processes. A highly heterogeneous cell surface expression of these epitopes was observed. None of these epitopes were observed on the cell surface during growth in the presence of tunicamycin, which inhibits mannan N-glycosylation and in acidic conditions, which hinders their incorporation in mannan.

Mapping of beta-1,2-linked oligomannosidic epitopes among glycoconjugates of Candida species
Article Abstract:
A study shows that glycoconjugates of Candida albicans serotypes A and B and C. tropicalis consist of beta-1,2-linked oligomannosidic epitopes on a 14-18 kDa polydisperse antigen. High molecular mass, above 100 kDa, polydisperse ConA-reactive mannoproteins have partial link with beta-1,2-linked oligomannosidic epitopes, in C. albicans. Details of the study conducted, by Western blotting, on various Candida species are given.
