Survival and physiologic response of common amakihi and Japanese white-eyes during simulated translocation
Article Abstract:
The physiological effects of various translocation trials on common amahiki (Hemignathus virens) and Japanese white-eyes (Zosterops japonicus) were determined to develop guidelines for translocations of endangered species. The findings showed that the birds were affected by translocation which resulted in weight loss, anemia, hyperproteinemia and elevated heterphil to lymphoctye ratio, uric acid and creatinine phosphokinase levels. The highest risks to birds occurred during the first 24 hrs of captivity.

A new species of extinct flightless passerine (Emberizidae: Emberiza) from the Canary Islands
Article Abstract:
A new species of extinct passerines haas been identified based on the bones discovered in Cueva del Viento, a volcanic cave at Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Cranial histology of the long-legged bunting (Emberiza alcoveri) places the species at one end of the range of variation of the genus. The species was found to be a flightless bird as shown by its reduced forelimb bones and carina sterni, long hindlimb bones and estimated wing length, weight and wing loading.
