Multiple epoxide hydrolases in Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici and their relationship to medium composition and host-specific toxin production
Article Abstract:
The production of Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici host-specific toxins and epoxide hydrolase (EH) activity were studied during the growth of this plant-pathogenic fungus in stationary liquid cultures. Media containing pectin as the primary carbon source displayed peaks of EH activity at day 4 and at day 12. Partial characterization of the EH activities suggests the presence of three EH activities, each of which can be biochemically distinguished by substrate preference and sensitivity to inhibitors.

Production of the mycotoxin fumonisin B1 by Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici
Article Abstract:
The detection of the presence of mycotoxin fumonisin B1 (FB1) in liquid cultures of Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici is discussed. High-pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to detect the metabolite. Fast atom bombardment, ion spray mass spectrometry and parent-daughter tandem mass spectrometry were used to confirm its identity. The biosynthesis of FB1 by the Alternaria pathogen wasfound to be valid.

Inhibition of polyketide synthesis in Alternaria alternata by the fatty acidsynthesis inhibitor cerulenin
Article Abstract:
The effect of the fatty acid synthase inhibitor cerulenin on the synthesis of the polyketide mycotoxins alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME) in Alternaria alternata was studied. The results indicated that cerulenin directly inhibited the synthesis of alternariol. The synthesis of AME was also inhibited, but the results suggestedthat this inhibition was due to the shortage of the precursor alternariol.
