Breeding biology and territoriality of the Hawaii creeper
Article Abstract:
The breeding behavior of the endangered Hawaii creeper, Oreomystis mana, was investigated by monitoring breeding pairs and their nests. Females of this species did most of the nest building and incubation. Males fed the females while they are incubating and helped feed the chicks once they are hatched. Nest construction typically takes 11-15 days while incubation takes 13 days. Males are very territorial during the breeding season. Home ranges averages 11.9 and 4.5 hectares during the non-breeding and breeding seasons, respectively.

Tool use by bristle-thighed curlews feeding on albatross eggs
Article Abstract:
Bristle-thighed curlews feedingon albatross eggs were observed to use stones as tools for cracking the eggs open. The stones are thrown forcefully at the eggs rather than dropped onto them. The inability of curlews to grasp intact eggs, the sensitivity of the curlew bill to sharp blows against hard surfaces and the thickness of the shellapparently combined to produce such behavior. This is the first report of tool use by any shorebird species.
