The ties that bind: localization of the sister-chromatid cohesin complex on yeast chromosomes

Article Abstract:

Localization of the sister-chromatid cohesin complex is discussed as it occurs on yeast chromosomes in this review article. Topics include delocalization in stages of a meiosis-specific cohesin complex and the relationship between sister-chromatid cohesion and kinetochore behavior. Identification of the cohesin complex and its role at the centromere makes delineation of the molecular mechanism by which cohesion is established and maintained possible.

Novel functions of nanos in downregulating mitosis and transcription during the development of the Drosophila germline

Article Abstract:

Mitosis and transcription in development of the Drosophila germline are discussed relative to novel functions of nanos. It downregulates mitosis. Defects that cause germ cells in embryos from nos mutant mothers not to go to the primitive gonad and to prematurely express some germline-specific markers have been traced to the synctial blastoderm stage. Pole cells in nos null embryos to not establish/maintain transcriptional quiescence. Germ cells that are nos null cannot attenuate the cell cycle. They keep dividing. Removing the Sxl gene in the zygote mitigates the migration and mitotic defects of nos null germ cells.
