On the trail of a point mutation: The discovery of a blood-cancer gene raises tantalizing questions
Article Abstract:
The discovery of V617F invited comparisons to BCR-ABL, the tyrosine kinase mutation that came to light in 1983 as the direct cause of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Compared to the BCR-ABL mutation, V617F is not 100% specific to polycythemia vera, and 50% of patients with essential thrombocytemia and idiopathic myelofibrosis also carry it which suggest that the mutation might actually be a 100% specific clue to a new and distinct clonal myeloproliferative disorder, the phenotypes at different stages.

Measuring up: Should you be using screening tests?
Article Abstract:
Many companies have started using screening tools for assessing their candidates before recruiting. The screening tools are used to assess and quantify cognitive, behavioral and personality traits, such as creativity, integrity and adaptability, which the traditional interviews and resume checks might fail to reveal.
