Partitioning of symbolic bacteria between generations of an insect: a quantitative study of a Buchnera sp. in the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) reared at different temperatures
Article Abstract:
Quantitative DNA hybridization was used to measure the population of symbiotic Buchnera bacteria in pea aphids grown at various temperatures. The bacteria increased from 1.3 x 10 raised to the seventh power to 2.0 x 10 raised to the seventh power cells mg. per aphid at a temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Centigrade. The number of bacterial cells depends on the aphid's embryo content. An aphid with a high embryo content would have a higher bacterial population.

Transmission of nephridial bacteria of the Earth worm Eisenia Fetida
Article Abstract:
Evidence based on curing experiments in situ hybridizations with Acidovorax-specific probes and 16S RNA gene sequence analysis is presented to show that egg capsules contain high numbers of the bacterial symbiont and that juveniles are colonized during development within the egg capsule. It was observed that there is a developmental stage of the embryo of the earthworm Eisenia Fetida within the egg capsule that ensures specific colonization.
