Patterns of movement of dark-rumped petrels and Newell's shearwaters on Kauai
Article Abstract:
The use of ornithological radar and night-vision scopes to monitor the movement patterns of Dark-rumped Petrels and Newell's Shearwaters on Kauai reveals a variety of patterns determined by season, time of the day, and breeding. The movement rates on the radar increased for more than 2 hours during sunset and sunrise. It is low in the middle of the night, and movement rates varied seasonally with changes in breeding patterns and fledging growth. The impact of the moon on movement rates seems to be very small.

New information on Kittlitz's Murrelet nests
Article Abstract:
Studies of the nesting habitat and nest-site features of Kittlitz's Murrelets in remote Alaskan zones and in the Russian Far East revealed that birds nesting at high attitudes prefer bases of southerly facing rocks, where warming hastens the melting of snow, thereby providing easy passages for nestlings to the sea. Unvegetated scree slopes at downhill slides of large rocks were the commonly used locations for laying eggs by these birds.

Effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on habitat use by birds along the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Article Abstract:
Thirty four species of marine-oriented birds along the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska were examined to measure the effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The oil spill clearly had a significant environmental impact on marine-oriented birds, particularly on habitat use in the area. Negative effects on shoreline invertebrate communities were observed in terms of their use of oiled habitats.
