Phylogenetic diversity of symbiotic methanogens living in the hindgut of the lower termite Reticulitermes speratus analyzed by PCR and in situ hybridization
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the phylogenetic diversity of methanogens in Reticulitermes speratus termites collected in the Japan archipelago using the PCR approach. The sequencing of 60 clones of archaeal small-subunit rRNA genes amplified from the termite showed that majority, 56 clones, clustered in the genus Methanobrevibacter. Results indicate that Methanobrevibacter-related methanogens were the main species colonizing the hindgut of the R. speratus.

Culture-independent characterization of a gene responsible for nitrogen fixation in the symbiotic microbial community in the gut of the termite Neotermes koshunensis
Article Abstract:
Research conducted on the culture-independent molecular method examines nitrogen fixation gene (nifH) expression in the termite gut microbial community Neotermes koshunensis. Results include nifH detection by reverse transcription (RT-PCR) and RT-PCR product analysis.

Localization of symbiotic clostridia in the mixed segment of the termite Nasutitermes takasagoensis (Shiraki)
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the phylogeny and distribution of symbiotic bacteria in the wood-eating termite Nasutitermes takasagoensis (Shiraki). The association between these bacteria and mesenteric epithelium has been analyzed.
