Identification and characterization of an ATP binding cassette L-carnitine transporter in Listeria monocytogenes
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered an operon in Listeria monocytogenes that is similar to the operon encoding the OpuC and OpuB solute transporters of Bacillus subtilis. The OpuC operon in L. monocytogenes transports L-carnitine into the cell, which protects the cell against hyperosmotic stress.

Role of sigma(super B) in heat, ethanol, acid, and oxidative stress resistance and during carbon starvation in Listeria monocytogenes
Article Abstract:
The sigma(super B) factor in Listeria monocytogenes protects the bacterium during carbon starvation and contributes to acid and oxidative stress resistance. Acid resistance is also pH-dependent.

Role of sigma(sup)B in regulating the compatible solute uptake systems of Listeria monocytogenes: osmotic induction of opuC is sigma(sup)B dependent
Article Abstract:
Research addresses the regulation of accumulation of two osmoprotectants, betaine and carnitine, in Listeria monocytogenes and the role of sigma(sup)B factor in the process. Data suggest that sigma(sup)B is essential for the regulation of carnitine utilization but not for betaine utilization by the pathogen.
