Scheduling differences of molt and migration for Baltimore and Bullock's orioles persist in a common environment
Article Abstract:
Specimens of Icterus galbula bullockii (Bullock's orioles) and I. galbula galbula (Baltimore orioles) were collected from the Great Plains in order to examine molting patterns relative to the fall migration. Both juvenileand adult bullockii leave their breeding range before the prebasic molt. However, galbula specimens in fresh basic plumage were common. The differences in molting pattern persisted in an area where the ranges of the subspecies overlapped. Thus, the scheduling of the fall molts and migration of these orioles must be under genetic control.

Age-specific characters and annual molt schedules of Hermit Warblers and Townsend's Warblers
Article Abstract:
The age-specific plumage characteristics and the annual molt schedules of Hermit Warblers (Dendroica occidentalis) and Townsend's Warblers (Dendroica townsendi) were studied as a step in investigating hybridization between the two species. The criteria in establishing age was based on the appearance of rectrices and wing coverts. Documentation of the molt schedules, on the other hand, revealed that prebasic molt is completed before the birds arrive on the wintering grounds, while the prealternate molt is completed on the wintering grounds.

Clarifying the Humphrey-Parkes molt and plumage terminology
Article Abstract:
In studies of the sequences of molts and plumages of Indigo Buntings, Painted Buntings and Lazuli Buntings, the terminology for molts and plumages as recommended by Humphrey and Parkes was used. Willoughby's chief criticisms arose from the confusion over how to apply the Humphrey-Parkes terminology correctly. The correct way lies in determining homologies, both with other species and between age classes within species. Definition and interpretation of key terms were clarified. Assumptions were elucidated.
