Seasonal incidence of Vibrio vulnificus in the Great Bay Estuary of New Hampshire and Maine
Article Abstract:
The presence of Vibrio vulnificus in the Great Bay estuary of NH and ME, as well as in three freshwater tributaries was monitored from May 1989 to December 1990. The results showed the presence of V. vulnificus in early July, peaking at August and slowly disappearing in early October. The bacterium was detected even at a temperature of 11.1 degrees celsius, in waters with no oysters. Statistical analysis revealed a strong correlation between the presence of V. vulnificus in water and oysters and temperture and salinity. However, other factors may also be involved in the population cycles of V. vulnificus.

Improvement of the immunomagnetic separation method selective for Escherichia coli O157 strains
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to improve the immunomagnetic separation (IMS) method selective for Escherichia coli O157 strains where nonspecific adsorption interferes with immunomagnetic separation. Using a low-ionic-strength solution lowers this interference as evidenced by the increase in proportion of E.coli O157 to non-O157 E.coli cells from 9.6 to 31.4 times compared to the proportion obtained from the conventional IMS method. The solution was evaluated via E.coli O157-spiked samples.
