Foraging site selection by nonbreeding white-faced Ibis
Article Abstract:
Foraging site selection by White-faced Ibis in the Grasslands Ecological Area was examined, and habitat variables were compared with paired, random locations in managed wetlands of the Grasslands. Density and biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates were contrasted with a subsample of bird foraging locations. Ibis selected foraging locations that were much higher chironomid and lower oligochaete biomasses compared to random sites.

Seasonal variation in diurnal and nocturnal distributions of nonbreeding shorebirds at North Humboldt Bay, California
Article Abstract:
The incidence and number of nonbreeding shorebirds foraging at North Humboldt Bay, California, change significantly between day and night. The diurnal and nocturnal patterns vary by season and by shorebird taxa. The differences in frequency of occurrence between day and night are less during fall than in spring or winter. Most foraging occurs during the day, though some species forage in equal numbers at night. Species such as Marbled Godwit, Willet, and dowitchers show a peak nocturnal abundance during fall and a diurnal peak during winter or spring. Changes in moonlight and other environmental factors also affect the day/night patterns.

Environmental and habitat correlates of pasture use by nonbreeding shorebirds
Article Abstract:
Environmental and habitat correlates of pasture use by nonbreeding shorebirds were studied to determine factors influencing bird use of pastures. The study examined the spatial distribution of shorebirds in coastal pastures near Humboldt Bay, CA, and correlated patterns with environmental and habitat variables. Results reveal that habitat characteristics attractive to shorebirds can be attributed by means of grazing by livestock.
