Selecting lactic acid bacteria for their safety and functionality by use of a mouse colitis model
Article Abstract:
Several studies have established the possibility of specific probiotics being therapeutically beneficial in inflammatory bowel disease but a rigorous screening of new probiotics is recommended to study the likely adverse interactions with the host. The role of three lactobacilli on intestinal inflammation and bacterial translocation was investigated using variations of the mouse model.

Application of measurements of transepithelial electrical resistance of intestinal epithelial cell monolayers to evaluate probiotic activity
Article Abstract:
Five potentially probiotic lactobacilli are investigated among which Lactobacillus plantarum MF1298 and Lactobacillus salivarius DC5 showed the highest increase in the transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) of polarized monolayers of Caco-2 cells. Preincubation with MF1298 attenuated a decrease in TER induced by Listeria monocytogenes.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG modulates intestinal absorption, fecal excretion, and toxicity of aflatoxin B1 in rats
Article Abstract:
The modulation of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) uptake in rats by administration of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is demonstrated. Fecal AFB1 excretion in GG-treated rats is increased through bacterial AFB1 binding.
