Genetic diversity of Nostoc symbionts endophytically associated with two bryophyte species
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the endophytic Nostoc symbionts of thalloid bryophytes. The diversity of these symbionts has been investigated via the rRNA (super)Leu intron sequence as a marker.

Discovery of rare and highly toxic microcystins from lichen-associated cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I
Article Abstract:
Study was conducted to demonstrate that a terrestrial cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. strain IO-102-I isolated from a lichen association produced six different microcystins. Highly toxic microcystins were found in a terrestrial Nostoc strain and it is concluded that the toxicity of cyanobacteria therefore cannot be predicted from their habitat or from the stain identity because even closely related terrestrial cyanobacteria may vary in the production of secondary metabolites.

Sequence variation of the tRNA(super Leu) intron as a marker for genetic diversity and specificity of symbiotic cyanobacteria in some lichens
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to assess the genetic variability of cyanobacterial tRNA(super Leu) introns in some symbiotic lichen associations containing Nostoc symbionts. A method was employed to directly amplify the tRNA(super Leu) intron from small pieces of crude lichen material without any DNA extraction. Results revealed that the symbiont in situ is one Nostoc strain rather than a diverse community of cyanobionts. Evidence also suggested that each lichen thallus contained only one intron type.
