Solvent-augmented mineralization of pyrene by a Mycobacterium sp
Article Abstract:
A Mycobacterium sp. mineralizes 50% pyrene in the presence of mineral soil solutions. Detergent levels below the critical micelle concentration, and hydrophobic solvents, such as paraffin oil, squalane and cis-9-tricosene, increase the mineralization rate. Water-miscible solvents and hydrophobic solvents, such as decalin, suppress mineralization. The bacterial cells attached to solvent droplets degrade pyrene faster than cells suspended in an aqueous medium. Hydrophobic solvents can be used to develop biodegradation methods for removing harmful polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as pyrene.

Metabolic efficiency and turnover of soil microbial communities in biodegradation tests
Article Abstract:
An increase in the concentration of unlabeled glucose in the presence of constant glucose radiocarbon levels increases the evolution of 14CO2 in biodegradability screening tests of soils. The increase in 14CO2 formation appears to be due to an increase in the zymogeneous (opportunistic) microorganisms as compared to the autochthonous (humus-degrading) microorganisms. The zymogeneous microorganisms have a high growth and turnover rate and incorporate low levels of carbon into their biomass. The addition of saturating levels of benzoate and n-hexadecane decreases 14CO2 production.

Cobalamin-mediated mercury methylation by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans LS
Article Abstract:
The positive identification of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans LS as a methyl carrier and the documentation of its involvement in the mercury methylation process is discussed. The strain was subjected to cell growth and methylmercury analysis, corrinoid extraction and purification, high performance liquid chromatography analysis, fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectral analysisand transmethylation. Results indicate that cobalamin is used by D. desulfuricans LS for the methylation of mercury.
