Song sparrow males use female-typical vocalizations in fall
Article Abstract:
A resident population of banded adult male Song Sparrows in Washington state was observed to be using a vocalization, or the female-typical chitter call, outside the breeding season. The chitter call is composed of a number of single notes that are combined in a quick downsweep-upsweep set. Since only females of the species regularly vocalize, the behavior is believed to be a means for the adult males to communicate about territories to juvenile males. The behavior may have been triggered by the juvenile males' inability to sing full adult songs that convey territorial boundaries.

Song types, repertories and song variability in a population of chestnut-sided warblers
Article Abstract:
Song diversity and variability were analyzed in a Massachusetts population of chestnut-sided warblers to evaluate multiple song type functions. The Dendroica pensylvanica species, which has two song categories, had as much as 12 different song types that had either accented or unaccented endings. Most of the songs were seldom used, and the population members do not share any set of song types. The repertoire function may involve a communication function for song type switches.
