Species identification using genetic tools: the value of nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequences in whale conservation
Article Abstract:
DNA sequence analysis is an effective technique for identifying the source of samples that are derived from endangered species. Application of the method and the three-times rule to retail whale meat markets has confirmed the value of mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences in the conservation of whale populations. Thus, phylogenetic sorting at nuclear loci may produce species-specific sequences when mitochondrial alleles are reciprocally monophyletic and the branches leading to the mitochondrial DNA sequences of a particular whale species are longer than the difference within species.

Shallow mtDNA coalescence in Atlantic pygmy angelfishes (genus centropyge) indicates a recent invasion from the Indian Ocean
Article Abstract:
A 454-bp segment of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region is compared among pygmy angelfishes of the subgenus xiphypops, which includes the three Atlantic species, the Indian Ocean species and an Indo-Pacific species [Centropyge fisheri (Cfi)]. The result from mismatch and coalescence analyses shows that estimates of effective female population sizes are consistent with founder events by tens of individuals in the western Atlantic followed by expansion to several million individuals.
