Stochastic gene expression, disruption of tissue averaging effects and cancer as a disease of development
Article Abstract:
Starting from observations on the stochastic nature of gene expression, ideas to help clarify the nature of microenvironmental contribution to cancer phenotypes are provided. It is suggested that the etiology of cancer and generation of genetic instability in cancer cells should be considered with reference to the findings on both the stochastic nature of gene expression and its regulation at tissue level.

Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron: a dynamic, niche-adapted human symbiont
Article Abstract:
The completed sequences of nearly 100 bacterial genomes over the last eight years have demonstrated the extensive genetic variability of the eubacteria. The proteome also reveals the organism's extensive ability to adapt and regulate expression of its genes in response to the changing ecosystem.

LINE-1 retrotransposons: Modulators of quantity and quality of mammalian gene expression?
Article Abstract:
The potential functional consequences of LINE-1 (L1) retrotransposons, which are replicating repetitive elements that are the most-abundant sequences in the human genome, and its replication, are reviewed. L1 insertions might structurally modify endogenous genes and regulate gene expression.
