Phylogeny of related functions: the case of polyamine biosynthetic enzymes
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that the origin of ureohydrolases can be deduced from comparing the amino acid sequence similarity trees. Data indicate a functional kinship amongst the sequences reflecting aspects of phylogeny and that arginases and agmatinases share manganese-ion-binding sites.

Sulfur-limitation-regulated proteins in Bacillus subtilis: a two-dimensional gel electrophoresis study
Article Abstract:
A two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis study of sulfur-limitation-regulated proteins has been undertaken in Bacillus subtilis to compare the proteome of a wild-type strain where sulfate or glutathione is the only sulfur source. The ytml gene is within a locus of 12 genes co-regulated in response to sulfur availability. This putative operon is activated by a LysR-like regulator, YtIl. This is the first regulator involved in control of expression in response to sulfur availability to be identified in B. subtilis.

A vector for systematic gene inactivation in Bacillus subtilis
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the functions of the uncharacterized open reading frames observed in the Bacillus subtilis genome. Several vectors were constructed to perform insertional mutagenesis in the chromosome. Results demonstrated that the target gene was inactivated, that the lacZ reporter gene was transcriptionally fused to the gene and that the Pspac promoter controls the transcription of downstream genes.
