Characterization of growth and acid formation in a Bacillus subtilis pyruvate kinase mutant
Article Abstract:
Results show that pyruvate kinase mutants of Bacillus subtilis do not produce acid, instead produce increased amount of carbon dioxide and reduction in growth. Data reveal that high production of phosphoenolpyruvate and glucose-6-phosphate retard bacteial growth.

Engineering of Bacillus subtilis for enhanced total synthesis of folic acid
Article Abstract:
A study investigated whether the yield of the B vitamin folic could be elevated in Bacillus subtilis. Controlling the activity of the enzyme pyruvate kinase by placing it under inducible control is one strategy devised to elevate yield while insuring that a rapid growth rate results.

Supply-side analysis of growth of Bacillus subtilis on glucose-citrate medium: feasible network alternatives and yield optimality
Article Abstract:
The processing of glucose by Escherichia coli network leads to conflicts between maximizing carbon or ATP yield, with maximal theoretical carbon yield being less than .80 of cell C/g of glucose C. Nonoptimal flux regulation contributes significantly to apparent cellular maintenance requirements. Elevated carbon yield can be attained without the alleviation of citrate-glucose utilization-induced stoichiometric constraints, which can interfere with the attainment of network objectives. The high carbon yield and nil acid formation are linked to restriction of glycolytic capacity.
