Tandem repeat polymorphism and heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial control region of redfishes (Sebastes: Scorpaenidae)
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted characterizing the molecular basis of the size polymorphism and its frequency and pattern of occurrence within and among individuals of three redfish species (Sebastes) in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Analysis revealed that the tandem array of redfish is adjacent to the transfer RNA gene. Among the three species, no significant results were found on the mean number of repeats per fish and the frequency of heteroplasmy. Forty-two percent of redfishes were found to be heteroplasmic. Results suggest the presence of a mitochondrial gene flow among the species.

Tandem repeats and heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial DNA control region of the loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)
Article Abstract:
The mitochondrial control region of the loggerhead shrike, Lanius ludovicianus, has a 128bp direct tandem repeat which is responsible for heteroplasmy in the region. A gene conversion mechanism is responsible for sequence variation in the tandem repeats. A novel model involving an inverted repeat and present next to the tandem repeat is developed to analyze repeat duplication. The individuals of the endangered population of loggerhead shrike in San Clemente lack three repeats, indicating that the island endemic has a small population with little gene flow from the mainland.
