The Rift Valley complex as a barrier to gene flow for anopheles gambiae in Kenya: The mtDNA perspective
Article Abstract:
There are incongruities in descriptions of Anopheles gambiae population structure. High differentiation of populations have been measured across the Rift Valley, although no differentiation was detected based on mtDNA. Old data was compared to new mtDNA data resulting in high and significant differentiation.

Population structure of Anopheles gambiae in Africa
Article Abstract:
The authors have investigated population structure of Anopheles gambiae in Africa. They report the use of microsatellite loci in samples from 10 countries, and demonstrate that they have used heterogeneity among loci, and that the putative outlier loci have been removed from analyses in the effort to capture genome-wide patterns.

The Rift Valley Complex as barrier to gene flow for Anopheles gambiae in Kenya
Article Abstract:
The eastern Rift Valley and its surrounding areas may act as a barrier to gene flow of Anopheles gambiae, the main mosquito vector of malaria in Africa. Genetic variation was measured within and between populations in each side of the Rift, and genetic diversity was found to be lower in eastern populations. It is likely that drift rather than mutation generated the differences between populations.
