The assumed assimilation of cholesterol by lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium bifidum is due to their bile salt-deconjugating activity
Article Abstract:
The cholesterol assimilation of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria due to their bile-salt deconjugation is discussed. Precipitation of bile salt and cholesterol was conducted at different acidity values. Culture optical density and colony counts were used to measure bacterial growth. High- performance liquid chromatography was used to analyze bile salt. The precipitation of bile salt due to solubility loss during deconjugation was established.

Intra- and extracellular beta-galactosidases from Bifidobacterium bifidum and B. infantis: molecular cloning, heterologous expression, and comparative characterization
Article Abstract:
Three beta-galactosidases from Bifidobacterium bifidum DSM20215 and one beta-galactosidase from B. infantis DSM20088 are all able to produce galactooligosaccharides from lactose even though they have very different amino acid sequences, molecular structure, and size. These bacteria are used as probiotics in food, and certain oligosaccharides can stimulate their growth.

Cloning and characterization of the bile salt hydrolase genes (bsh) from Bifidobacterium bifidum strains
Article Abstract:
The molecular cloning, sequencing and characterization of a bile salt hydrolase (BSH) enzyme from Bifidobacterium bifidum ATCC 11863 are described. The PCR amplification primer set showed the high level of sequence homology in their bsh genes within the species of B. bifidum.
