Feeding associations between white-fronted terns and Hector's dolphins in New Zealand
Article Abstract:
The association between white-fronted terns, Sterna striata, and Hector's dolphins, Cephalorhyncus hectori, during near-shore foraging of the latter is investigated. Significant association between terns and dolphins were observed during austral spring and early summer. Terns were observed to associate with 15.7% of surface-feeding dolphin groups. This is an example of facultative commensalism which may be particularly useful during the terns' breeding season.

Energy expenditure and food requirement of Cassin's auklets provisioning nestlings
Article Abstract:
The field metabolic rate of adult Cassin's auklet, Ptychoramphus aleuticus, was monitored using the doubly-labeled water technique during the period of provisioning for half-grown nestlings. The measured energy expenditure for adult auklet is 413 kilojoules per day. The diet of these birds consists predominantly of crustaceans and they have to consume food amounting to 67% of their body weight during the chick-rearing period
