The incidence of nonbreeding by adult great skuas and parasitic jaegers from Foula, Shetland
Article Abstract:
Breeding pairs of great skuas, Catharacta skua, and parasitic jaegers, Stercorarius parasiticus, were observed in the Foula Island, Shetland, to determine the rate and causes of nonbreeding in adult seabirds. The average rates of adult nonbreeding are 8.9% and 5.5% for great skuas and parasitic jaegers, respectively. The principal cause of nonbreeding is the loss of mate through death and divorce. Among older birds, senescence is also a significant contributing factor.

Predation on Rhinoceros Auklet eggs by a native population of Peromyscus
Article Abstract:
Depredation by Keen's mice (Peromyscus keeni) can make a significant contribution to egg mortality for Rhinoceros Auklets nesting on Triangle Island, British Columbia, Canada. Total egg loss seems to be greater here than on islands where there are no mice. A high predation rate is probably connected with temporary egg neglect by foraging parents. It is possible that egg depredation will rise in years of low marine productivity, when adults spend more time foraging.

Predation and kleptoparasitism by migrating Parasitic Jaegers
Article Abstract:
The feeding behavior of Jaegers migrating or spending the winter is studied. In addition to seabirds, Parasitic Jaegers also prey upon invertebrates, ducks and shorebirds. However, the capture rate has nothing to with the type of shorebird chased. This reliance of fall migrating birds is studied at a stopover located on the shore of St. Lawrence River, Quebec.
