Abundance of diurnal raptors on open space grasslands in an urbanized landscape
Article Abstract:
Point counts of diurnal birds of prey on Boulder, CO, grasslands were performed for three winters and summers and related to the landscape features of the count areas. Counts of the wintering raptors Bald Eagles, Ferruginous Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks and Prairie Falcons were observed to be negatively correlated with the degree of urban development in the area. Findings showed that urban grasslands can support most diurnal birds of prey as long as prey populations are present. However, some species are very susceptible to the degree of urbanization.

The role of ornithology in conservation of the American West
Article Abstract:
Conservationist and ornithologist Joseph Grinnell was among the first to acknowledge the important role of birds in conservation as a result of their charisma, intimacy and vulnerability to the environment. He was proven right by evidences demonstrating the impact of birds and ornithology to preserve species and their homes. Given the continuing risks to natural landscapes in western Northern America, ornithologically-oriented conservation initiatives need to be increased.

Bridging the gap between ornithology and fisheries science: use of seabird data in stock assessment models
Article Abstract:
Potential use of seabird data in fisheries stock assessments is investigated. The most promising index is seabird energy acquisition rate, which correlates to fisheries catch per unit effort and measures stock size. Predation data could predict subsequent recruitment of fisheries to commercial stocks and may be used to refine natural mortality estimates. Yield-per-recruitanalyses can be used to assess seabird impact on fisheries stock.
