The mitochondrial genome of the honeybee Apis mellifera: complete sequence and genome organization
Article Abstract:
The complete sequence and genome sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the honeybee Apis mellifera linguista was examined using the Drosophila yakuba map as reference. The Apis genome is slightly longer, has a shorter control region, and has a longer intergenic, noncoding sequences than the Drosophila. Lysine was found in greater amount but less in alanine in the Apis proteins. The differences in protein amount between Apis and Drosophila are related to the %AT in the codon families and the degree of divergence in amino acid composition.

Linkage map of the honey bee, Apis mellifera, based on RAPD markers
Article Abstract:
A honey bee linkage map that is based on the analysis of 365 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers in the male offspring of a female honey bee reveals that separate linkage groups are formed by the X locus for sex determination, and black body color and malate dehydrogenase genes. RAPD markers help map an average of 2.8 loci for every 10-nucleotide primer used in polymerase chain reactions. The map includes 3110 cM of linked markers on 26 linkage groups, with a 9.1 cM mean interval between markers.

Microsatellites refer to a DNA marker class characterized by large allele numbers that substantiate their application to genome mapping and paternity analysis models. Microsatellite models are tested in the case of honey bee populations by investigating morphometrical inferences on evolutionary branches and subspecies differentiation.
