Differential effect of activators of protein kinase C on cytoskeletal changes in mouse and hamster eggs
Article Abstract:
The study noticed no resumption of the cell cycle, second polar body emission and pronucleus formation during treatment of metaphase II-arrested mouse eggs with activators of protein kinase C (PKC) as found by earlier studies on hamsters. The cause of this difference was investigated. The seeming activation of hamster eggs by activators of PKC is probably due to the effects of diacyglycerol and phorbol diesters on the cytoskeleton, which produces structures resembling polar bodies. Differences in the sensitivity of the cytoskeleton to rearrangements caused by these agents accounts for the different responses in mouse and hamster eggs.

Aberrant expression of Pax-2 in Danforth's short tail (Sd) mice
Article Abstract:
Pax-2-specific antibodies were used to study Pax-2 expression patterns in Danforth's short tail homozygous mice, which were characterized by the absence of a notochord in caudal regions. In the developing spinal chord, Pax-2 expression was found to be normal in anterior regions. However, ectopic expression occurred in the basal plate's ventral portion in the areas lacking the floor plate, suggesting that signals coming from the floor plate can affect the expression domains of Pax-2. In the excretory system, expression was also normal in the anterior regions but did not occur in the uninduced metanephric mesenchyme.
