The mosaic nature of intergenic 16S-23S rRNA spacer regions suggests rRNA operon copy number variation in Clostridium difficile strains
Article Abstract:
The sequence of each individual intergenic 16S-23S rRNA spacer region (ISR) in five strains of Clostridium difficile are compared to explore the extent of the diversity and see whether such information might provide the basis for more sensitive and discriminatory strain typing methods. Results reveal that the intergenic 16S-23S rRNA spacer regions showed a high degree of diversity, not only among the rrn operons in different strains and different rrn copies in a single strain but also among ISRs of the same length.

Deletion Mutations caused by DNA strand slippage in Acinetobacter baylyi
Article Abstract:
A different system for exploring RecA-independent deletion was presented by phenotypic properties conferred by pcaG1102, a 30-bp deletion in one of the structural genes for Acinetobacter baylyi (A. baylyi) protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase, which is required for growth with quinate. The results described with chromosomal A. baylyi pcaG support conclusions obtained with repetitions in plasmids, phages, and chromosomes from other bacteria.
