Essential role of BETA2/NeuroD1 in development of the vestibular and auditory systems
Article Abstract:
The role of BETA2/NeuroD1, a bHLH transcription factor expressed in development in the mammalian pancreas and in many central/peripheral nervous systems places in development of the vestibular and auditory systems, has been investigated. Mice with a null mutation have behavior abnormalities that suggest an inner ear defect. Defects can be explained by a major lack of sensory neurons in the cochlear-vestibular ganglion (CVG). BETA2/NeuroD1 is the first gene shown to regulate neuronal and sensory cell development in both the cochlear and vestibular systems.

COUP-TFI: an intrinsic factor for early rationalization of the neocortex
Article Abstract:
COUP-TFI, an orphan member of the nuclear-receptor superfamily, has been identified as a regulatory factor for early neocortical regionalization in study using mutant mice. The spatial and temporal expression pattern of COUP-TFI indicates a possible role in specification of the neocortex and in keeping cortical identity intact, perhaps working with Pax6 and Emx2, intrinsic factors.

The orphan nuclear receptor COUP-TFII is required for angiogenesis and heart development
Article Abstract:
The orphan nuclear receptor chicken ovalbumin upstream promoter-transcription factor II (COUP-TFII) is necessary for heart development and angiogenesis. F1 heterozygotes were intercrossed to generate homozygotes in an effort to determine the physiological results of deleting COUP-TFII. At weaning no homozygotes were found in initial analysis of 132 F2 offspring. More analysis of heterozygous intercrossings found no COUP-TFII homozygotes at birth. The homozygous mutation at the locus is thus lethal for the embryo, the result of defective heart development and angiogenesis. COUO-TFII is in the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily and may be becessary fo bidirectional signaling between endothelial and mesechymal comparments required for heart development and angiogenesis.
