The prevalence of abdominal lesions on wood stork nestlings in north and central Florida
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the distribution and effect of abdominal lesions on Wood Stork nestlings from 11 wading-bird colonies in north and central Florida from 1981 to 1985. The overall colony frequency for affected nestlings was only 1.3% for the study period, alhtough nestlings with lesions made up 0 to 6.5% per colony-year. Lesions were most noticeable in 2-4 week old nestlings. Of the nests found to contain nestlings with lesions, 47.5% contained also contained nestlings without lesions. It was observed that only 9.7% of affected nests were located more than 7 meters above the ground, suggesting that higher nests were less colonized by dermestid beetles.

Endocrine control of life-cycle stages: A constraint on response to the environment?
Article Abstract:
Finite-state machine theory was used to define and compare different avian life-history cycles. Interactions of environmental cues on the timing of life history stages are not uniform in all populations. Arctic birds with short breeding seasons in severe environments seem to use one reliable environmental cue, while birds with longer breeding seasons show greater plasticity, integrating several environmental cues.
